A document containing a full description of the dates for closures and information about the scope of the project can be found by clicking on the picture alongside.

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between junction 3 at Hayes and junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24-hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for most sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

  • The M4 will be closed in both directions over the weekend of 19 to 22 February 2021 between junctions 5 (Langley) and 4b (M25) including the clockwise and anticlockwise link roads from the M25 junction 15 to the M4 junction 4b; for major smart motorway upgrade work. The closure will start after 8pm Friday 19 February and the motorway will reopen by 6am on Monday 22 February 2021. Clearly signed diversions will be in place;

  • Eastbound: traffic will be diverted off the M4 at junction 5 (Langley) to join the M25 at junction 14 via the A4, A3044 and A3113. Traffic should head north on the M25 to re-join the M4 at junction 4b.

  • Westbound: traffic will be diverted off the M4 at junction 4b to join the M25. At the junction 14 on the M25, traffic should follow the A3113, A3044 and the A4 to re-join the M4 at junction 5 to continue the journey west.

This closure will be fully utilised and will be used for other work activities.

There are also the following overnight carriageway closures scheduled this week:

  • The M4 will be closed eastbound overnight between junctions 5 (Langley) and 6 (Slough-Windsor) on Monday 15, Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 February 2021. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A355 and the A4.

  • The M4 will be closed eastbound overnight between junctions 13 (Newbury) and junctions 12 (Reading) on Friday 19 February 2021. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A34, A339 and A4.

  • The M4 will be closed in both directions overnight between junctions 12 (Reading) and 10 (Wokingham) on Monday 15, Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 February 2021. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A4, A33, B3270, A3290 and A329M.

  • The M4 westbound will be closed between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 11 (Reading) on Friday 19 February 2021. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290 and B3270.

Slip road closures planned for next week are as follows:

  • M4 junction 8/9 – the M4 junction 8/9 westbound entry slip road will be closed overnight on Monday 15, Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17, Thursday 18 and Friday 19 February 2021.

In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions. The project is continuing but all our work is under careful review in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and safety measures are in place on site to protect workers, their families and the public.
